On lava and kids

It strikes me that, on the level of the single individual, things could very well be more efficient. I mean you, Evolution!

How is it that, of all the things that may be encoded into our hereditary system, we find:

Kids all around the world, with no possible means or motivation to communicate with each other, may at any given time think the particular floor they are standing on is (again: of all things!) lava.

To boot, we find that said lava is held at bay by a carpet or, as in the case above, some odd pieces of wood.

How?

I don’t understand the biology, but I do love it when kids try helping each other across their lava. 🙂 #awesome
